Spain has made a shocking decision to sack manager Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the FIFA World Cup, as announced on Wednesday by Royal Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales.

Lopetegui was appointed the next manager for Real Madrid, which apparently has sparked Spain’s sudden decision.

According to Dermot Corrigan of ESPN FC, Rubiales says that “The Spanish national team is the team of all the Spaniards. We only found out just five minutes before that he was leaving for Madrid.”

Spain later announced that Fernando Hierro will take Lopetegui’s place (h/t ITV Football).

Players tried to save Lopetegui’s job but it was not enough to stop the unprecedented decision so close to the World Cup kickoff.

Lopetegui, 51, took over as the Spain boss following their quarter-final elimination from the UEFA European Championship in 2016.
