Former New York Cosmos’ boss Giovanni Savarese is taking the reigns as manager for the Portland Timbers, according to ESPN’s Taylor Twellman.
Savarese will join the Timbers from NASL side the New York Cosmos, replacing Caleb Porter who resigned last month.
Savarese compiled a regular season record of 65-26-51 during his tenure with the Cosmos leading them to 3 league titles and a runner up for the title in 2017.
Timbers owner Merritt Paulson said that he preferred a manager who was familiar with MLS and that speaking Spanish was a bonus, during a conference call with the media.
Savarese scored 52 goals in 121 league and playoff appearances during his playing career in the MLS.
Portland reportedly targeted New York Red Bulls manager Jesse Marsch but were turned off by the asking price.
